The name focuses on the last element, as flat white means 'flat white' in English. It can be assumed that the name refers to the frothing level of the milk. It should be noted that in a flat white the milk is not as frothy as in a cappuccino or latte. However, there is a little more of it than in a classic white coffee. Immediately after the coffee is prepared, it creates a light texture and a flat surface. Flat white is one of the the most popular milky coffeeswhich is based on a double espresso. There is no doubt that flat white is a relatively young coffee. It was developed in the 1980s and 1990s in the Antipodes. There it was also quickly popularised. Legend has it that it was invented by a barista in Australia who was unable to frothy milk for coffee for his customer because it was too thin. In the end, he gave up and served him coffee with gently frothed milk and apologised for the 'flat white'. However, the coffee turned out to be very delicious and became a permanent fixture on menus in Australia, and soon afterwards it also made its way to Europe. Among the most popular coffee drinks are espresso, caffe latte and cappuccino. It should be added that the world of coffee does not like a vacuum, so once in a while a novelty appears and becomes a permanent fixture in the canon. This is what has happened with flat white, which is available in more and more cafés. There is no doubt that the world of coffee has been dominated by drinks of Italian origin. Such drinks are based on espresso, to which cream or frothed milk and sometimes other additives are added.

Origin of flat white

The origin of flat white is difficult to pinpoint unequivocally. Most people claim that flat white originated in Australia, but there are also people who say that the drink was invented in New Zealand. What we can be sure of is that this coffee was a coincidence. Today, in most good cafés you can drink a flat white. Some people may find it difficult to tell the difference between a flat white and a latte or cappuccino. All the coffees mentioned are made with a base of espresso and milk. The amount of milk and its consistency is the most important variable. On top of this, the amount of espresso is also important and needs to be dosed really carefully. The proportions for a flat white are as follows: 120 ml of full-fat and gently frothed milk and 60 ml of espresso. In short, you add 120 ml of milk to a double espresso and that's it. A flat white coffee consists of a double shot of espresso, so it is not surprising that it is more intense in flavour than caffe latte and cappuccino. The milk needs to be foamed so that a thin layer of froth forms on the surface of the coffee and the whole drink is milky and pleasantly creamy.
